Canadian or Foreign Driver's Licence

If you hold a valid driver’s licence issued by another Canadian province or territory or another country, you can drive in Québec for six consecutive months. After that time, you must hold an international driving permit.

If you decide to settle in Québec, you must obtain a Québec licence. You can apply for your licence as soon as you arrive.

The following people from outside Canada can apply to exchange their current licence for a Québec licence, or they can begin the process to obtain a Québec licence, as applicable:

  • temporary foreign workers who are authorized to work in Canada for more than 6 months
  • the spouse and any children of the temporary foreign workers mentioned in the first bullet, provided the spouse and children are authorized to stay in Canada for more than 6 months
  • foreign students authorized to study in Canada for more than 6 months
